Prom Tips for Parents
Allow no more than ten teens, five couples, in a limo Limiting the number increases your chances of knowing each student and his or her parent, and putting your kids in a comfortable situation because they are with friends, rather than strangers Limit the group to good friends and acquaintances This Prom is for LCC students only unless they are a date not from LCC attending on a pre-approved guest pass If your student is using a limo for the prom, inspect the limo before you let your kids get inside A reliable limo company will have removed all alcohol from the interior of the limo Do not have alcohol present at any pre-dance events This means no alcohol for parents and guests This is simply modeling good behavior Remember, Prom belongs to the kids; this is not your event There is no need for you to celebrate in front of your teens Require an itinerary from your teen Know where they will be dining, what time, when they will get to the dance, when they will be picked up from the dance, where they are going after the dance, and where and when they will be dropped off at the end of the evening Meet the limo driver when he/she arrives Make sure the driver knows
the itinerary and your expectations The driver is working for you as the parent, not your students Full payment should not be due until the end of the evening Make sure you have the phone number of the limo company, and it is not unreasonable to ask for the cell phone number of the limo driver Make sure your student has a cell phone or you know the cell number of members of their party Call the limo company immediately to register complaints If possible, assist your student with dinner arrangements and know where the restaurant is and the phone number Many times students have been caught short with funds for dinner when ordering dinner at market prices Help them out Most restaurants have their menus on-line and you can go on-line before the Prom to check out prices Do not allow just driving around in the limo Nothing is accomplished by this and it tends to be the time when trouble is most likely to occur Be aware that we will be randomly testing students at the door with a breathalyzer as well as searching purses No backpacks will be allowed Any teens showing signs of alcohol consumption will be excluded from the dance and a parent or guardian will be called to take them home The
student and parents will then meet with the administration the following Monday to go over the consequences of their actions and receive appropriate discipline Make sure you talk to your teen when they come home after the dance Spend time talking about the evening and making sure they came home safe, sound, and sober
