Cultivation
The system becomes a means through which future projects are spread throughout the city The mature project is an inspiration to others If desired, the project is disassembled and transplanted to other sites throughout the city, leaving no trace of the building that once inhabited the site
Cultivation
Maturation
Maturation
The bamboo has reached the plateau of its growth and the system reaches its most adaptable state The building can be expanded to a two story structure and can accommodate many dierent size and organizational needs Rather than expressing the intention of being merely friendly, the dwelling exists in kinship with natural systems
Living Roof
Tension - Compression Collar
supports floor, wall roof components via bracket connectors
Growth
The bamboo has matured enough to allow a single story residence to be established utilizing each BAMBU as a springpoint for the buildings structure Brackets are attached to the supportive bamboo columns allowing floor and roof systems to be established Transplanting the park it replaced, the roof becomes a natural place for a shaded garden and incorporates a living roof system The exterior building envelope is
formed per the contextual needs of the neighborhood and the environmental conditions of the site By being separate from the structure, many dierent systems are possible including solar fabric, glass infused with high thermal-value silica gel, or insulated opaque panels Systems are now integrated into each BAMBU, allowing the building to become a truly living structure that collects its own energy and water, filters waste for reuse, and environmentally tempers the building
Regionally Harvested Timber Structure
Growth
Biological Water Treatment Storage Unit
treats household waste to advanced standards through a series of aerated translucent tanks that host plant communi
ties microorganisms Sunlight, oxygen, bacteria, algae, plants, snails fish work together to purify the water for reuse The tanks are expressed in the architecture to make visible how truly waste equals food
Monolithic Thermal Panels
Germination
The bamboo is allowed to grow over the course of 1-3 years, depending on the age of the plants upon Seeding During this period, the site blossoms as a beautiful public commons in the shade of growing bamboo Here, BAMBU is in its most iconic form, projecting the future
growth of the city within the newly created community gardens throughout the city
Germination
Geo-Exchange Interface Fin
Earth Coupled Root Containment System
Seeding
BAMBU is deployed throughout the neighborhoods of Roanoke Target sites include lots that are vacant, have unsalvageable buildings, or are in other similar states such as those brought to light in this competition Each BAMBU is augered into the sites in a regular gridwork
T-C Collar plan
BAMBU
Bio-Active Modular Building Unit
BAMBU is a deployable housing development strategy that not only addresses the question how do we build the C2C house of the future? but also how to build the C2C city of the future? The ebb and flow of growth in our urban neighborhoods is inevitable; the only way to sustain them is through a system that can encourage growth in times of recession and adapt to growth in times of prosperity
The BAMBU system has two key components The first is a building module that integrates living, structural, and environmental building systems into an iconic and expressionistic object The second is a plan for the deployment of these objects throughout the city Like public art, these seedlings establish a
new civic identity while also projecting Roanokes embracing the C2C vision
